Blanket Exercise

Blanket Exercise

We did the blanket activity in September, and it was to teach us of the unfairness towards Indigenous people and how their land was taken away. It started with our two classes standing on a bunch of blankets that represented North America- which was called Turtle Island by the Indigenous people. Throughout time, they kept taking away more and more blankets and they also told us what the Indigenous peoples experienced. Most people left feeling shocked, upset and in disbelief at the cruel things some settlers did. For example, they brought unknown illnesses and sent diseased blankets to the Indigenous people on purpose! Also, they forced them onto reserves and into residential schools as well as took away all their culture and religions from them. To us that meant we should try and fix this as much as we can to try and help the Indigenous peoples, rather than hurt them. - Lea & Danielle
